What Is SELANK?

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide based on tuftsin, an immune-signaling tetrapeptide, with a Pro-Gly-Pro extension added to the C-terminus. It is used in research that connects neuronal signaling, stress-response pathways, and immune-cell communication.

Overview

Preclinical studies use Selank to examine gene networks associated with GABA signaling, neurotrophins such as BDNF and NGF, monoamine metabolism, cytokines, and stress-response markers. Put simply, it is studied as a possible bridge between nerve-cell communication and immune signaling rather than as a direct consumer mood product.

Researchers are interested in Selank because it may help map how a short immune-derived peptide influences both nerve-cell communication and stress-related signaling.

History

Selank was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences from the tuftsin sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg. A Pro-Gly-Pro tail was added to create a longer, more stable research peptide. Published work has appeared mainly from Russian academic groups since the 1990s, and broad independent replication remains limited.

Research Findings

  • Preclinical gene-expression studies have reported changes in targets associated with GABAergic neurotransmission.
  • Animal and cell models have measured BDNF, NGF, and other neurotrophin-related responses.
  • Research has also examined monoamine-metabolism, cytokine, and immune-signaling markers under controlled stress conditions.
  • The literature is relatively small and methodologically varied, so individual findings should be treated as model-specific.
